An estimated 5 to 30% of the decline in some fish stocks can be attributed to ‘ghost gear’- abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG). The scale of the problem is exacerbated by the fact that this gear can take up to 600 years to decompose in our oceans.
