The Chronos Sustainability Sustainable Finance Careers Guide is practical guide for students and early career professionals looking to build a career in sustainable finance. Building on interviews with sustainable finance professionals working for banks, institutional investors, ESG research and data providers, consultancies, regulators and industry bodies, the guide describes possible career pathways into sustainable finance, and discusses the qualifications, technical and non-technical skills and experience that employers in this area are looking for.
Nicky Amos (MD of Chronos Sustainability and co-author of the report) commented: “People want to work in sustainable finance because it allows them to bring their passion for sustainability to work and allows to make a real difference to the world in which they live. The question faced by many students and early career professionals is how can they start and then successfully build a career in sustainable finance. We hope that this guide provides a useful roadmap for that journey.”
Reflecting on the skills and attributes needed to get started in sustainable finance, Dr Rory Sullivan (CEO Chronos Sustainability and co-author of the report) observed: “Much greater emphasis in graduate roles is being placed on quantitative skills and the ability to process and analyse data, to manage large data sets, and to integrate these data into investment models, into reports and into investment products. But quantitative skills are only part of the picture. Virtually every interviewee for this report stressed the importance of good communication skills, the ability to present information and conclusions clearly, the ability to work with others and, critically, the ability to persuade others to act on sustainability”.
